Decorating Islington's period homes

What's involved in repainting a room?
A proper repaint runs in a set order. The room is cleared or furniture moved to the middle and covered, and floors are protected. Then comes the preparation: cracks and holes filled, surfaces sanded, and loose or flaking paint scraped back.
Ceilings are painted first, then walls, with the edges cut in by brush before the rest is rolled. Most walls need two coats for an even colour, and new plaster needs a thinned mist coat first so the paint bonds to it. Woodwork is usually done last, so any drips on the walls can be cleaned up and the gloss or eggshell finish stays clean.
That's why a room that looks like a quick job can take longer than expected. The prep is most of the work, and it's what makes the finish last.
Choosing the right finish
Matt emulsion is the usual choice for walls and ceilings in living rooms and bedrooms. Kitchens, bathrooms and hallways do better with a more durable, wipeable finish. For woodwork, eggshell gives a softer look and satinwood a little more sheen.
